RDD Motorsports Heads West To OMC
South Florida-based Kart Mini team hits the home of the 2009 US Rotax Championship and strikes gold.
Deerfield Beach, FL – RDD Motorsports of Deerfield Beach, Florida, the exclusive North American importer of the Kart Mini chassis, recently visited the Oklahoma Motorsports Park located in Norman, OK. OMC will be host to the 2009 US Rotax National championships being staged in early September. The team arrived on Thursday night and completed a full day of practice on Friday in preparation for the doubleheader weekend.
“We really wanted to get here to OMC to test and see what we can learn for the Rotax Nationals,” states team manager André Serra. “It’s a long trip from south Florida, but we really wanted to get the team familiar with the track.”
RDD Motorsports would send two Kart Mini drivers into the Mini Max event piloted by Dalton Sargeant and Garrett Sargeant. Dalton running in kart #441, would run the table taking the pole, the pre-final win and the top spot on the box in the final. Garrett, steering kart #411, took the fifth spot in ‘quali’. He would use the inside start position to move forward quickly and take third in the pre-final. In the final staging, Garrett would mount a charge early and hold onto the third spot in the final tally.
“I’m very happy with my run and excited to first podium on the Mini-Max Class,” smiles Garrett Sargeant. “The team did a great job and my RDD Kart Mini was awesome.”
In the Micro-Max class, the lone RDD Motorsports driver Logan Sargeant took the top spot in timed qualifying. In the pre-final, Sargeant would finish in second in a tight battle with the leader. In the final Sargeant would line up outside on the front row ready to push forward at the drop of the green. Moving to the point early on Sargeant was pursued heavily by the second place kart. With two laps remaining in the final, officials showed a full black flag to the leaders. Sargeant pulled off the next lap as the officials actions seemed to indicated he was under penalty. The black flag was in fact for the second place kart. Officials did penalize the second place kart but could do nothing for Logan, a hard lesson learned by a bright young driver.
Sebastian Ordonez would tack to the track in his #261 Kart Mini for Rotax Junior. Ordonez would qualify in third after the timed session was complete. Starting inside row two would give Ordonez a great spot to push for the lead. Pacing the leaders, Ordonez would finish in third on the pre-final. The final was a similar run to the pre-final as Ordonez would work to retain his podium position taking third on the final session.
In Sunday action the duo of Dalton and Garrett would look to repeat their previous days success. Dalton qualified in third position having experienced a carburetor problem. The team went to work and got the kart ready for the pre-final. In the pre-final Dalton would again suffer with mechanical gremlins and with one lap to go, the motor shutdown. With some solid heads up driving, Dalton was able to finish in second, side by side with the third place kart. The RDD Motorsports crew would again go back to work and were able to isolate an electric problem in the wiring harness. With repairs complete, a determined Dalton was able to charge from inside row two to take the win at the checkered flag.
“I am very happy to win today after all the problems that we had on the kart,” comments Dalton. “I really have to say thanks to all RDD Motorsports crewmembers who worked so hard to find the problem on my kart.”
Sunday was a rough day for Garrett Sargeant. Carburetor problems lead to a disappointing eighth spot in qualifying. The team worked out the bugs before the pre-final. In the pre-final, traffic would catch Garrett out leading to a crash and sending him to the back of the field for the final. The final was no kinder to the young charger who would again be sidelined as he pushed to the front. Best described as a character-building day, Garrett will no doubt be very hungry for redemption next time out.
Logan Sargeant was looking for vindication from the previous days' challenges. He put down the gauntlet by taking pole, sending notice he would be a factor. In the pre-final, a spin late in the race left open the door and he rallied back from fourth place to cross the finish line in second. In the final, the gutsy Logan would not be denied, taking the win with a strong finish.
Sebastian Ordonez, Sunday was a carbon copy of Saturday action. Ordonez would qualify in the third spot, finish in third in the pre-final session and finish in third slot for the final test of the day.
“We are very happy with all the results that we had here this weekend,” comments RDD Motorsports team leader Andre Serra. “We were able to bring home three third place trophies and three first place trophies. All of our drivers made it to the podium.”
RDD Motorsports will be back at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex for the Summer Shootout. The next race for RDD Motorsports Team will be June 6th and 7th for the rounds three and four of the South Florida R-max Challenge being held at the Miami-Homestead Karting Facility.
